Originally formed in 1886 under the name ‘Dial Square FC’ the Gunners have been operating under the name of Arsenal since around 1915 after spells as ‘Royal Arsenal’ and ‘Woolwich Arsenal’. Named after the Royal Arsenal ammunition and armament factory in Woolwich, London, the club moved across the river to Highbury and North London in 2013. Arsenal have an illustrious history with many international and title-winning players but the official Arsenal website name their greatest player of all time as Frenchman Thierry Henry. He notched 228 goals in 277 appearances.

Arsenal had significant success in the 1930’s, bagging five championships but in recent years the manager with the most success is another Frenchman, Arsene Wenger. Wenger coached the Gunners for 22 years and developed a free-flowing European style of football that wowed Arsenal and football fans across the country.

In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s Arsenal had success based on defensive solidity under George Graham, under Wenger it was different. Wenger is also heralded as the man who professionalised the English game. Fitness linked to strict diet and physical regimes would become commonplace in the country.

But it was his ‘Invincibles’ side that will be forever remembered, winning the 2003/04 Premier League title without losing a game. A feat only ever achieved before by Preston North End in the 1800’s.

The team had Gallic flair, not just because of Wenger but also Henry, Robert Pires, Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Viera. Other European stars, Freddie Ljungberg and Dennis Bergkamp made them impossible to stop.

Famously parodied in the 1997 film ‘The Full Monty’ the Arsenal back-four in the 1980’s and 1990’s was famous for their offside trap. Lee Dixon, Tony Adams, Steve Bould and Nigel Winterburn knew each other’s games back to front and regularly stepped up with their arms in the air to catch opposition strikers out. This also lead to the famous ‘one-nil to the Arsenal’ chant, a common score-line with such a mean defence.

Current Arsenal boss and former player Mikael Arteta has a team packed with young talent. England internationals Bukayo Sako and Emil Smith-Rowe show that the future is bright for the Gunners. Kieran Tierney, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli not yet in their prime will be a force in coming seasons.

The famous red and white of Arsenal is also reflected in the club crest. Also featuring a large cannon reflecting the club’s heritage the badge is recognised across the world.

In North London Arsenal’s rivals are just down the road, Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs and Arsenal have come up against each other almost 200 times over the seasons with Arsenal holding the upper hand, winning approximately 20 more times than Tottenham. One of the sweetest North London derbies for Arsenal was winning the league in 1970/71 at Spurs’ White Hart Lane. Not satisfied with doing it once, Arsenal did it again in 2003/04!
