Brief History of Chelsea FC
Established in 1905, London's Chelsea FC have become one of the most successful clubs in the Premier League. They are based at their 40,000 capacity Stamford Bridge in up-market West London. In 2003 the club was sold to Russian owner Roman Abramovich who has pumped millions of pounds into the playing and coaching staff and the infrastructure around the club. Never shy to dispose of managers in the Premier League after short periods, the Stamford Bridge side are currently managed by German boss, Thomas Tuchel.
Legendary Chelsea FC Players
The list of legendary players at Chelsea FC is endless. Cases could be made for Peter Osgood, Ray Wilkins and John Terry but the name that stands out is Gianfranco Zola. Signed from Italian club Parma where he won the UEFA Cup in 1995 Zola was short in stature but high on skill and vision. Playing for Chelsea FC from 1996 to 2003 he scored 80 goals in 311 appearances including winning the FA Cup twice (1997, 2000), the League Cup once (1998) and the European Cup Winners Cup once (1998).
Chelsea FC's Magnificent Modern Era
Chelsea FC had success in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s picking up a league title, an FA Cup and a League Cup along the way but the real success stories at Stamford Bridge began in the mid-1990’s that made them one of the most successful clubs in the United Kingdom.
Beginning under the ownership of Ken Bates a series of high profile managers added charisma and style to the Chelsea FC playing-style. Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Claudio Ranieri all brought silverware to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea FC were all of a sudden a rival to the Premier League big guns, Manchester United, Arsenal and the rest.
When Roman Abramovic took over at Stamford Bridge the investment in the club increased exponentially. Big money transfers into the Premier League squad soon followed. Michael Essien came from Olympique Lyon and Didier Drogba from Marseilles, both for over £30 million. These two players would go on an have a massive impact with the club.
Ranieri had the longest managerial spell in recent times, lasting almost four years. Famously former player Roberto di Matteo was relieved of his duties after his caretaker reign guided the club to beat Bayern Munich two-one in the 2012 Champions League Final.
Chelsea have also seen success in the Carabao Cup. They have been in the Carabao Cup final eight times, with five wins and three losses.
Chelsea FC Rivals
Based at Stamford Bridge Stadium, West London, the closest team geographically that Chelsea FC have played in previous seasons is Fulham. While there is a rivalry there it is across London at Arsenal that Chelsea FC have their most heated rivalry with big recent battles in Premier League and FA Cup competitions. Across the course of their rivalry Arsenal have won 13 more of the matches the two have played but Chelsea FC put to an end a three-match losing streak against Arsenal last time out in the Premier League, beating them two-nil in August 2021.
Tottenham Hotspur are also London Premier League rivals but in recent years Liverpool have also become a fixture to look out for for Chelsea FC fans. This non-London rivalry has built up in the modern era mainly because the sides have been drawn against each other in some major competitions in matches that have been packed with major incidents.
None more so than Liverpool’s Luis Garcia’s so called ‘ghost goal’ at Anfield in the 2005 Champions League semi-final game. At face value the goal looked like it had not crossed the line, it was awarded and Liverpool progressed. The teams would go on and draw each other in the Champions League semi-finals twice in the next three years with Liverpool and Chelsea FC progressing one-time each.
Depending on the game you are interested in can determine the cost of the premier league tickets so if you're just looking to go to any Chelsea game you can pick up a bargain for certain teams. Those travelling from Elland Road may need to pay a little more for a ticket since there is a rivalry between Chelsea and Leeds. Same goes for any London Derby. Chelsea v West Ham United, Arsenal, and Tottenham, may all command a premium price. Where as tickets for Chelsea v Newcastle United or Southampton will likely be a little cheaper.
Chelsea FC's Current Premier League Stars
Chelsea FC are packed with big money signings and high profile Premier League players. Thomas Tuchel’s squad boasts the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz all of whom star for their respective countries. N’Golo Kante provides the central defensive midfield capabilities and Reece James is one of the most exciting wing backs in the Premier League.
Chelsea FC's 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far
Chelsea Football Club's first-half to the Premier League season has started well particularly against rivals in Greater London and the surrounding area. Wins against Crystal Palace, Watford, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford mean that Chelsea are realistic contenders for the Premier League.
But stand-out performances including a 7-0 demolition of Norwich City, where Norwich barely touched the ball but a tough draw at Burnley's Turf Moor made some people question the Blues' title credentials. Then a 3-0 away win at Leicester City made the rest of the league once again take notice.
The only time the Blues have not scored so far this season was a goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. And a 3-2 win against old rivals Leeds United showed flair.
With a favourable UEFA Champions League draw against Lille with the first leg at Stamford Bridge and the second at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Chelsea may be able to focus their large squad on two fronts. A Premier League title and Champions League double would go down well with owner Roman Abramovic.
