Brief History of Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur were formed in 1882. For the first two years of the club's existence they were known at Hotspur Football Club reverting to the Tottenham Hotspur name to reflect the area of North London the club hails from.

During their early years Spurs began to develop the 'Cup Team' reputation that has followed them around ever since. With more silverware in Cup than league competitions Spurs fans are used to Final's success.

Now with a new stadium to rival any in the country, including North London rivals Arsenal, Spurs are ready to kick-on and kick-off another period of sustained success.

Legendary Players for Tottenham Hotspur

With a reputation for exciting football and flair players the most legendary player for Spurs could be Jimmy Greaves. Famously not selected for the 1966 World Cup Final, Greaves started his career with Chelsea, scoring over 100 goals before ending up at White Hart Lane via a very brief stay at AC Milan in Italy.

Greaves ended up scoring 266 times for Spurs in nearly 300 appearances. Greaves spent a season at West Ham United after Spurs but it his is time in the white of Tottenham that he is most remembered for.

Cup Competitions, Years with a '1'

For many years it became a common occurrence. If the year ended with a '1' then Tottenham Hotspur would win a cup competition. In the early years came a 1901 FA Cup win against Sheffield United and another in 1921 against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Then came a few lean years before a serious run: 1961 FA Cup Winners (vs Leicester City), 1971 League Cup Winners (vs Aston Villa), 1981 FA Cup Winners (vs Manchester City), 1991 FA Cup Winners (vs Nottingham Forest).

SInce 1991 there has been no Cup wins in years ending with a '1' ending what was one of the quirkiest stats in football.

Spurs Rivalries

Spurs biggest rivalry is across North London with Arsenal. It is one of the biggest derbies in the United Kingdom. Over their history Arsenal hold the upper hand with approximately 20 more victories, though the gap has narrowed in recent years. One Hotspur goal, Paul Gascoigne's free-kick goal against Arsenal in the 1991 FA Cup Final remains one of the competition's most memorable moments.

Chelsea and West Ham United are also big games for Spurs but none match the rivalry with Arsenal. So if you're looking to go to one of these games you might find that there is a premium to be paid. However, if you just want to see a game at White Hart Lane then you might be able to pick up a deal on football tickets for matches where there isn't much of a rivalry, such as a game against Burnley or Norwich.

However, you might find that there are some rival teams that do not seem like an obvious choice, such as with Southampton FC. Often these rivalries can be one sided from their fans. So this can impact ticket prices for certain games. This is why you can see such a variance between ticket prices for different teams and games.

Current Premier League Stars for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club

England captain Harry Kane and Korean international Son Heung-min have an almost telepathic understanding. Playing together since 2015 Tottenham win more matches than they lose with the pair in the side.

Kane began playing for the Spurs senior team from 2009 but did not flourish in a Spurs shirt during his early years. Several loan moves including ones to Norwich City and Leicester City followed until he found his way at White Hart Lane. Since then he has flourished especially with 'Sonny' in the side.

Son joined in 2015 and gave Spurs ticket holders a glimpse of his talent with a brace against Qarabag in the UEFA Europa League before going on to score many more goals.

Tottenham Hotspur 2021/22 Premier League Season So Far

Tottenham started 2021/22 impressively, defeating Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford in their first three games. They then conceded three goals in all three of their next games including away matches at Palace and Arsenal. Wins against Aston Villa and Newcastle United followed.

Their yo-yo form continued and a 3-0 defeat at home against Manchester United was a particular low point. That defeat lead to the end of coach Nuno Espirito Santo and in came Antonio Conte.

Conte's first Premier League game in charge was an away match against Everton that ended in a goalless draw. Not great signs but since then Tottenham have improved. Wins against Leeds United and Brentford followed.

Trips to Old Trafford, Elland Road and Villa Park await big home matches against Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion.
